Ham Listeria Recall in Maine
Listeria fears prompted a ham recall on Christmas Eve, and the USDA has now releasted the retail list where the 312 pounds of tainted meat was distributed.
The ham, recalled by Gardiner, Maine-based importer Associated Grocers of Maine, was produced Nov. 25 and distributed to retail locations in Maine and New Hampshire. The 16-ounce packages have an establishment number of “141″ inside the Canadian seal of inspection and a sell-by date of “10JA24.”
Listeria monocytogenes
Listeria is a harmful pathogen is a parasitic, rod-shaped bacteria found in animal and human feces, on vegetation and in some livestock feed, and can spread to soil and water.
Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) in particular can cause an illness called listeriosis.
What is Listeriosis?
Most at risk for this disease are: pregnant women, the elderly, newborns, and anyone with weakened immune systems. In rare cases, the disease can be fatal, and also causes fever, headache, nausea and neck stiffness and in pregnant women can cause miscarriages.
