Pepe’s Gigante Louisiana Hot Sauce Flavored Cracklins have been recalled due to an undeclared allergen, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced. San Bernardino, Calif.-based Rudolph Foods Company, Inc., recalled the 205 pounds of pork skin products known as “cracklins” when it was discovered that their package did not include milk, a known potential allergen, in the list of ingredients. The 3.5-ounce packages have a “03/19/2010″ expiration date and establishment number “EST. 0525.”
Milk allergies are one of the most common allergies in children, according to the Mayo Clinic. Signs and symptoms typically occur within hours of milk consumption and may include:
- vomiting
- wheezing
- digestive problems
- hives
Occasionally, milk can cause life-threatening anaphylaxis, a reaction that can obstruct airways and prevent breathing. Such a reaction is a medical emergency and requires a trip to the emergency room and an epinephrine (adrenaline) shot. Signs of anaphylaxis may include:
- Swollen throat and constricted airways
- Facial flushing
- Itching
- Severe blood pressure drop and shock
