Generation 2 Childesign Crib Recall; Three Deaths Reported

recalled cribA drop side crib strangulation and suffocation recall is related to three infant deaths, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The Generation 2 Worldwide and “ChildESIGNS” drop-side cribs have plastic hardware that can break, causing the drop side of the crib to detach, creating a space just large enough for an infant or toddler to become trapped.

The crib’s mattress support can also become detached from the crib frame, creating another space in which a child could become trapped and suffocate or strangle.

“CPSC has received reports of three infants who suffocated when they became entrapped between the crib mattress and the drop side when the drop side detached. CPSC has received reports of three infants who suffocated when they became entrapped between the crib mattress and the drop side when the drop side detached…CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to stop using these cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Do not attempt to fix these cribs.”

  • July 2007: an 8-month-old Newark, Ohio child became entrapped between the drop side and the crib mattress and suffocated. The drop side had detached because a plastic stop tab broke on the lower track.
  • October 2003: an 8-month-old child from Richmond, Ind. also suffocated after becoming entrapped between the drop side and the crib mattress. The plastic hardware on the drop side was broken and allowed the drop side to detach from the crib headboard in one corner.
  • September 2002, a 6-month-old from Staunton, Va. suffocated because the lower drop side track was missing two screws. This allowed the drop side to detach from the headboard post, trapping the infant.

The CPSC has received 20 other reports of incidents with the drop sides of these Generation2 Worldwide ChildESIGNS cribs:

  • 12 incidents involved drop sides detaching from the rest of the crib
  • 2 reports involved a child becoming trapped
  • 1 child suffered bruising from the entrapment
  • 5 reports involve children falling out of the cribs because of the drop side detaching
  • 1 child suffered a broken arm from the fall
  • 8 reports of the mattress support detaching, allowing 3 children to become entrapped

Generation 2 is no longer in business, and the CPSC therefore does not know the total number of defective cribs distributed, but estimates more than 500,000 of these cribs were sold to consumers. Although ALL Generation 2 Worldwide ChildESIGNS cribs are included in this recall, some known model numbers include the following (The “X” denotes where an additional and varying number may appear at the end of the model number.):

Drop side crib dangers

Since 2007, there have been almost 5 million crib recalls, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Crib suffocation is one of the biggest hazards prompting these recalls. Many involve drop-side cribs. These cribs are designed with one side that is able to be raised and lowered so parents can more easily bend over and pick up a child. However, they can pose serious risk of injury or death to infants and toddlers.
