Pierino Frozen Noodles Recalled Over Egg Alleric Reaction

A recall of frozen “Jumbo Shells with Cheese” has been issued by Pierino Frozen Foods Inc., because the noodles contain undeclared eggs, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Eggs are a potential allergen that can cause severe reactions in people who are allergic to eggs.

The recalled frozen noodles were distributed to retail stores in the following states:

  • Michigan

  • Pennsylvania
  • Indiana
  • Colorado
  • Texas
  • Kentucky
  • North Carolina

People with egg allergies who consume a product containing eggs may suffer from severe and sudden allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock. During such a reaction, “tissues in different parts of the body release histamine and other substances. This causes the airways to tighten and leads to other symptoms,” according to the National Institutes of Health.  These symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Swelling of throat, lips, tongue, around eyes
  • Difficulty breathing and swallowing
  • Wheezing, coughing
  • Heart palpitations
  • Skin redness, hives, itchiness
  • Nasal congestion
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Fainting, dizziness
  • Anxiety
  • Drop in blood pressure and paleness
  • Loss of consciousness, collapse

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 requires that potential allergens be listed on the packaging of such products. According to the FDA:

“Approximately 2 percent of adults and about 5 percent of infants and young children in the United States suffer from food allergies; each year, roughly 30,000 individuals require emergency room treatment and 150 individuals die because of allergic reactions to food”

Pierino Frozen Foods is aware of one allergic reaction reported by someone who ate this product. Distribution of the product has been suspended until new packaging is available, which will clearly state eggs are one of the shells’ ingredients. Consumers may return the shells to the place of purchase for a full refund.
