A wheat allergy concern prompted a recall of 750 pounds of frozen cured pork patty mix because wheat, a potential allergen, was not listed on the packaging as one of the product’s ingredients. Food allergies, including wheat allergies, can cause serious and sudden reactions including anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock.
Champ Meatball Co., of Whittier, Calif., issued the recall on Feb. 10, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The recall involves 14 -ounce packages of frozen “CHAMP, Nem Nuong Cured Pork Patty Mix for Barbecue Meat Balls.” The establishment number “EST. 21436″ is printed on the packages inside the USDA mark of inspection, and the products were distributed to retail locations throughout California and Arizona.

Food Allergy Labeling Laws
Under federal law, certain recognized allergens MUST be labeled on product packaging to protect consumers from ingesting substances that could cause potentially life-threatening allergic reactions. Read the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) for more information on what ingredients must be labeled and what other rights consumers have regarding undeclared allergens on food packaging.
