Toyota Prius Hybrid Brake Defect Investigation

A Toyota Prius Hybrid brake investigation of model year 2010 vehicles  is being launched due to reports of malfunctioning brakes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced. The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has received 124 consumer reports of brakes momentarily malfunctioning, including four allegations of accidents resulting from the ptential brake defect.brakes

In a Feb. 4 statement, Toyota officials said:

“Toyota is aware of NHTSA’s intention to begin a Preliminary Evaluation centered on owner complaints of a braking issue with the 2010 model year Prius. Toyota will cooperate fully with NHTSA’s investigation.”

The Prius Hybrid brake investigation news comes within weeks of a recent Toyota sticky accelerator recall and months after a Toyota gas pedal floor mat entrapment recall. In a statement Feb. 4, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said:

“Safety is our top priority. That is why in recent weeks NHTSA has also issued a consumer advisory on the recall of several models of Toyota vehicles and the Pontiac Vibe involving pedal entrapment and sticky accelerator pedals.  We will continue to monitor these issues closely.”
