Wheat Allergy Recall of Frozen Turkey Patties

Wheat Allergen TurkeyA frozen turkey patty recall has been issued due to wheat allergy concerns, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

Daniel’s Western Meat Packers, based in Pico Rivera, Calif., recalled more than 16,000 pounds of frozen turkey patty products that were mislabeled and failed to list wheat as an ingredient. Because of wheat allergic reaction risks, any wheat ingredient in a food product is required by federal law to be listed on the food’s packaging.

The recalled turkey patty products that could contain undeclared wheat allergens include:

  • 10-pound cases of frozen “DANIEL’S WESTERN MEAT PACKERS, TURKEY PATTIES, 2-1 ROUND, KEEP REFRIGERATED.”
  • 10.93-pound cases of 7-ounce frozen “DANIEL’S WESTERN MEAT PACKERS, TURKEY PATTIES, KEEP REFRIGERATED.”

The products have the establish number “EST. P-2896″ inside the USDA mark of inspection and were distributed to restaurants in California and Illinois.

Wheat Allergy Risks

For those allergic to wheat, ingesting it can cause severe and sudden allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, in which victims may have difficulty breathing and feel dizzy, nauseuos, and experience swelling and other symptoms. Although this reaction is rare, it can potentially be life threatening, and can cause airway blockage, cardiac arrest and anaphylactic shock.
