Allergic Reaction Concerns Prompt Turkey Sausage Recall
A sweet Italian turkey sausage recall has been issued due to food allergy concerns, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Washington, Ind.-based Perdue Farms, Inc. recalled more than 10,000 pounds of fresh sweet Italian turkey sausage because it contains milk, which is a potential allergen that’s not declared on the product label.
Milk is one of eight foods identified by federal law as being known to cause serious allergic reaction in certain people and are therefore mandated to be declared on food labels, according to the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004.
People with food allergies can in some cases experience anaphylactic shock or anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction characterized by airway constriction due to swelling and an extreme drop in blood pressure. This type of reaction is responsible for 30,000 emergency room visits and 2,000 hospitalizations each year.
