Ice Maker Recall due to Fire Hazard

Ice Maker RecallAn ice maker recall involves Scotsman Commercial Modular Cube Ice machines associated with four reports of fires and 37 reports of burned or melted components, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The recalled ice machines (about 43,000 units) pose a fire hazard because an electrical part called a solenoid can fail. The manufacturer, Scotsman Group LLC, of Vernon Hills, Ill. has received no injury reports. Designed to be installed above ice storage bins or ice dispensers, the recalled Scotsman ice makers include the following model numbers:

  • C0522
  • C0530
  • C0630
  • C0830

  • C1448
  • C1848
  • C2148
  • EH130
  • EH222
  • EH330
  • EH430

Serial numbers of recalled units begin with: 05, 06, 07, 08 or 09. The serial and model numbers can be found on the backs of the machines and, on some machines, behind the machine’s front panel. The recalled units were sold at commercial food service equipment distributors nationwide from September 2006 through December 2009. Owners should stop using the machines and contact Scotsman to schedule a repair.

  1. Our fanily business which is a landmark in our community(for over 30 years) sustained a fire on April 26, 2007 and our ice machine was looked at as the cause from the begining. The burned remains of the machine was put in lock down, it’s location in the building was put under quarantine for over 2 weeks and noone was allowed in that area without the State Inspector. Representatives from both the manufacturer of the ice machine and the company who sold it to us came out with thier own inspectors. It was stated that the machine was mishandle during the initial spection so it could not be determined conclusively that it was that particular machine that caused the fire (we had 2 machines in the area). The firm that would have handled the suit wanted a $100,000 retainer and we were told that the Manufacturer had the means to drag the suit out for as long as they wanted which could become very costly for us and it would be years before we saw any money from it if any at all. We were highly discourage to pursue a lawsuit with them at the time and told to use our money & resources to concentrate on rebuilding our business.

However, the burned ice machine continued to be held in lock down as the probable cause for over 1.5 yrs and a few months after we gave the State Inspector the ok to distroy it the recall came out. When I found out about the recall I made an inquiry to him regarding it. He was not surprised to hear from me and not only was I told the same thing about it not being worth pursuing because they are a big company with the financial ability to drag it out I was also told that they would be even more prepared to drag things out because we would be “coming out of the workwork looking to collect” after the recall. Once again I was told it would be a useless fight and waste of our time & money because of the Manufacturers financial ability to make things work in thier favor.
