Pecan Recall due to Salmonella Concern
A pecan Salmonella recall has been issued by American Pecan Co. of Yancey, Texas, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The 1-lb. bags of Pecan Pieces were sold at the company’s Yancey, Texas location and by mail order to consumers throughout Texas and in New York and Massachusetts. The Pecan Pieces were recalled after a routine sampling by the FDA revealed the finished products contained the harmful bacteria that can cause a Salmonella infection (salmonellosis). This pathogen can cause flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals, including fever, diarrhea (possibly bloody), nausea, vomiting and other symptoms.
In children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems, Salmonella can cause more serious illnesses including Reiter’s Syndrome and possibly death. People who think they may have been sickened by this pathogen should see a doctor and be tested for Salmonella poisoning.
