E. coli Beef Recall Issued by Texas Firm
Approximately 135,500 pounds of potentially E. coli-tainted beef has been recalled by Fort Worth, Texas-based Beltex Corporation, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The FSIS has named this a “Class I” recall, meaning the health risk is high. The FSIS discovered the potential contamination during a routine inspection of Beltex Corporation facilities. According to the announcement:
“The establishment’s methods for analyzing samples for E. coli O157:H7 in beef products raised concerns about the safety of the product.”
This particular bacteria, E. coli o157:H7, can be especially harmful and even fatal in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. E. coli poisoning can, in rare cases, lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (E. coli HUS), which is a serious illness that can involve kidney failure.
If you suspect you or a loved one has been sickened by E. coli, be sure to go to the doctor and get tested for it. The E. coli-contaminated products related to this recall were distributed in the following states:
- Georgia
- Louisiana
- Ohio
