Trailer Brake and Axle Defects Prompt Two Recalls
Two recalls of defective boat trailers and defective Mirage snow mobile trailers have been announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Axle defect on snowmobile trailers can pose accident risk
Mirage Enterprises, Inc. is recalling certain 2007-2009 Xtreme Snowmobile Trailers that have a steel bracket that can crack. Failure of this bracket can cause the axle to separate from the trailer.
“This could result in loss of control, property damage, personal injury or death,” according to the NHTSA announcement. Dealers will repair the defective trailers free of charge by welding each axle bracket to the trailer frame. Defective trailers included in this recall are as follows:
Defective boat trailer brakes can pose risk of crash
Metal Fabrication, Inc. is recalling hundreds of model year 2010 boat trailers that have defective brake systems. The trailers, meant to haul recreational boats, may have defects that could lead to brake fluid leakage, and/or air may be inside brake lines that could cause brakes to malfunction, increasing the risk of a boat trailer crash, accident or injury.
The defective boat trailers were manufactured between Sept. 2009 and January 2010 and include the following model numbers:
- MFI / BDMR
- MFI / BDPY
- MFI / BDTU
- MFI / CTKR
- MFI / CTP3
- MFI / CTT3
- MFI / CTTU
Dealers will inspect and test the brake systems for free.
