Freshway Foods Lettuce E coli Recall Expands

e. coli o145 lettuceA lettuce E. coli recall issued by Freshway Foods of Sidney, Ohio due to concerns of E. coli 0145 contamination has expanded. Moore, Oklahoma-based Vaughn Foods has also recalled lettuce grown at the same Yuma, Arizona farm that health officials are investigating in connection with the Freshway Foods romaine lettuce recall.

The E coli 0145 outbreak associated with this recall has so far sickened 23 people in New York, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition, seven cases are being investigated as part of the outbreak. Many of the illnesses are concentrated at three major schools: Daemen College in Amhurst, NY, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Ohio State University in Columbus.

One victim in this outbreak, a student at Daemen College, has retained Pritzker Olsen food safety attorneys in litigation against contaminated lettuce distributors. Her E. coli O145 infection developed into a seriously life-threatening illness known as hemolytic uremic syndrome, or E. coli HUS, which attacks red blood cells and can cause kidney failure and other serious conditions.
