Apples Recalled due to Listeria Contamination
Sliced apples are being recalled over Listeria contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Marjon Specialty Foods, Inc. is a Plant City, Florida company that is recalling the sliced apples because the company’s routine sampling tests returned positive results for Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria that can cause listeriosis.
According to the FDA:
“Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
The recalled apples were packaged in 2-ounce single serving packages labeled as follows:

The products were distributed to three food service distributors in Florida, and further distributed to institutional and food service settings where it is possible the apples were removed from original packaging. Marjon has ceased production of these products and Florida state health officials are inspecting the company’s facilities.
