Black & Decker Recall of Defective Tools After Laceration Injury Reports

Black & Decker RecallBlack & Decker recall involving Random Orbit sanders has followed reports of laceration injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Towson, Maryland company recalled about 192,000 sanders after receiving 73 reports or incidents in which the black plastic disc that holds the sandpaper has broken or fallen apart. Fifteen of those reports involved injuries from flying pieces, including a facial laceration.

Black & Decker Sander Recall Hazard

According to the CPSC: The black plastic disc (called the platen) that holds the sandpaper can fly off or break apart during use and the disc, or pieces of the disc, can hit the user or those nearby, posing a laceration hazard.

The Black & Decker random orbit sander recall includes products with date codes between 200701 and 200929 the following model numbers, which are printed on a label on the sander:

  • RO400
  • RO400G
  • RO410
  • RO410K
  • RO410LW
  • FS3000ROS

The sanders are orange and black, with “Black & Decker” printed on the sanders. The date code is located on the underside of the sander where the dust bag is inserted. The sanders were sold at Home Center and hardware and discount stores and by Black & Decker dealers nationwide from January 2007 through July 2009 for about $40. Consumers should stop using the defective tools and contact Black & Decker for a replacement.
