Vernon Foods Recall Lawsuit
A lawsuit against Vernon Foods, LLC, a Prairieville, Louisiana, establishment has been filed by a 75-year-old man who contracted listeriosis after eating Vernon Foods head cheese. The suit alleges that the man spent more than a month in an intensive-care unit, is only somewhat ambulatory and has suffered memory loss, which may be permanent.
According to the complaint, on May 18, 2010 the listeriosis victim ate some Veron Foods head cheese that his son had purchased a few days earlier at Matherne’s Supermarket on Bluebonnet Boulevard in Baton Rouge, LA. On May 20, he was hospitalized and diagnosed with listeriosis.
The Vernon Foods lawsuit was filed after health officials investigating the man’s case of listeriosis found Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of Vernon Foods head cheese. In response to the listeriosis investigation and the positive sample, on August 14, Veron Foods recalled approximately 500,000 pounds of “ready to eat” sausage and hog head cheese products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The Vernon Foods recall involved the following products:
- All Size Packages of Veron Hot Smoked Sausage
- All Size Packages of Veron Mild Smoked Sausage
- All Size Packages of Martin Hot Smoked Sausage
- All Size Packages of Martin Mild Smoked Sausage
- All Size Packages of Veron Andouille Sausage
- All Size Packages of Martin Andouille Sausage
- All Size Packages of Veron Hog Head Cheese
The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “LA 22” inside the LDAF mark of inspection as well as date codes of 010110 through 111310 and were distributed to retail establishments and institutions within the state of Louisiana. Head cheese is a jellied loaf of meat, typically made from the edible parts of a pig’s head, feet, tongue and heart. It is generally eaten cold as a spread.
