This video is an update on the current listeriosis outbreak involving a Texas produce company, SanGar Fresh Cut Produce of San Antonio, Texas. The outbreak has sickened at least 10 people and killed 5. All of the reported victims are from Bexar, Travis and Hidalgo counties in Texas.
The high mortality rate is an indication of just how severe listeriosis outbreaks are. The fatality rate is often 50% or more.
Basically, what happened is that testing was done that confirmed that there was Listeria monocytogenes (the bacteria that causes listeriosis) at the SanGar plant. The company disputed the finding, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also tested environmental and product samples from the plant and found Listeria monocytogenes. There has been a SanGar celery recall.
