Fit & Active Turkey Recall After Salmonella Heidelberg Outbreak

Fit & Active ground turkey products have been recalled as part of a larger Cargil ground turkey recall, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The whole recall involves approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey, and Fit & Active ground turkey products are just one brand among many that Cargill has recalled.

The Salmonella Heidelberg ground turkey outbreak has so far sickened 77 people in 26 states. One of those illnesses in California resulted in death. The illnesses in the outbreak occurred from March 1, 2011 to the present. More recent outbreak-related cases of Salmonella Heidelberg may still be unreported. Salmonella Heidelberg is a particular strain of Salmonella that has developed antibiotic resistance.

The outbreak so far has ranged across the following states: AL (1), AZ (2), CA (6), GA (1), IA (1), IL (7), IN (1), KY (2), LA (1), MA (1), MI (10), MN (1), MO (2), MS (1), NC (1), NE (2), NV (1), NY (2), OH (10), OK (1), OR (1), PA (5), SD (3), TN (2), TX (9), and WI (3)

People who think they are sick with Salmonella symptoms should visit a doctor and get tested for Salmonella. If you have recently consumed any of the recalled brands of ground turkey, such as Fit & Active ground turkey, save any leftovers.
