Salmonella Outbreak Results in HEB Brand Ground Turkey Recall
HEB ground turkey is being recalled in connection with a Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak associated with ground turkey. The recall, issued by Cargill, includes several ground turkey brands, including HEB ground turkey. The total amount recalled is around 36 million pounds of ground turkey.
The Salmonella illnesses in the outbreak range from March 1, 2011 to present, but recent cases may have yet to be reported, according to the CDC. So far 77 people have been sickened in 26 states. One of those people, a California resident, died from the Salmonella illness.

The Salmonella illnesses are distributed throughout the 26 states as follows: AL (1), AZ (2), CA (6), GA (1), IA (1), IL (7), IN (1), KY (2), LA (1), MA (1), MI (10), MN (1), MO (2), MS (1), NC (1), NE (2), NV (1), NY (2), OH (10), OK (1), OR (1), PA (5), SD (3), TN (2), TX (9), and WI (3).
This outbreak is unique because it involves a particular drug-resistant strain of Salmonella called Salmonella Heidelberg.
