Cargill Turkey Salmonella Outbreak Still Under Investigation

A Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak associated with Cargill-produced ground turkey product is being continually investigated and the total number of illnesses has now been raised to 107, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A total of 31 states are now affected by the outbreak. After the outbreak, Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation of Springdale, Arkansas recalled approximately 36 million.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is urging consumers to check their homes for the recalled ground turkey products and be sure that no one consumes them. Restaurants and food service operations are advised to dispose of the products. The outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg has been found to be resistant to common antibiotic treatments, the CDC has stated. “This antibiotic resistance may be associated with an increased risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals,” the CDC said.

The distribution of illnesses throughout the 31 states is as follows: Alabama (1), Arkansas (1), Arizona (3), California (6), Colorado (2), Georgia (2), Illinois (13), Indiana (1), Iowa (2), Kansas (1), Kentucky (2), Louisiana (1), Massachusetts (3), Maryland (1), Michigan (12), Minnesota (2), Mississippi (1), Missouri (4), Nebraska (2), Nevada (1), New York (2), North Carolina (3), Ohio (10), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (1), Pennsylvania (5), South Dakota (3), Tennessee (2), Texas (14), Utah (1), and Wisconsin (4). According to the CDC:

“Twenty-three of these ill persons have been identified with Salmonella Heidelberg with a closely related PFGE pattern to that of the other 84 ill persons. The 23 ill persons with this closely related PFGE pattern of SalmonellaHeidelberg have been included in the total count of outbreak cases.”
