Maclaren Stroller Amputations Prompt Recall

maclaren stroller amputationMaclaren strollers can pose a fingertip amputation hazard, according to a CPSC announcement, which involves the recall of about 1 million strollers.

After 12 reports of fingertip amputations associated with its strollers, Maclaren and the CPSC initially announced the recall back in November 2009. However, additional reports have led to a second announcement of the recall.

Maclaren, a South Norwalk, Connecticut firm, has received 149 incident reports in total; 37 of those are injuries that occurred after the November 2009 recall. These 37 reports included:

  • 16 lacerations
  • 16 fingertip entrapments/bruisings

Maclaren Stroller Fingertip Amputation Hazard Information

How does the hazard occur? A child’s finger can become stuck in the stroller’s hinge mechanism when the stroller is being folded open or closed.

Which products are being recalled? The announcement involves all Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers sold before Nov. 2009. Strollers sold after May 2010 use a safe hinge mechanism design that does NOT pose a hazard.

Where were the recalled products sold? The hazardous Maclaren strollers were sold at juvenile product stores and mass merchandise retailers nationwide from 1999 through November 2009. They sold for between $100 and $360.

Britax Stroller Recall Over Laceration, Amputation Hazard

Britax recalled strollerA Britax stroller recall involves about 14,000 “Blink” umbrella strollers from Charlotte, N.C.-based Britax Child Safety, Inc., the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced. Children’s fingers can get caught in the stroller hinge and become cut or potentially amputated if the stroller is folded.

The recalled defective strollers have the word “Blink” printed on the metal frame on both sides below the handles. They were manufactured between May and September of 2009 and sold at Buy Buy Baby and other children’s product and mass merchandise retailers nationwide. The strollers were also sold online at Amazon.com, BabiesRUs.com, Target.com and Diapers.com from July 2009 through February 2010.

Graco Stroller Recall due to Amputation, Laceration Hazards

A Graco stroller recall involving about 1.5 million models was announced after five reports of fingertip amputations and two reports of fingertip lacerations, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Graco Recalled StrollerAtlanta, Ga.-based Graco Children’s Products Inc., is recalling “Passage,” “Alano” and “Spree” strollers and travel systems because the hinges on the stroller canopies can pose a laceration or amputation hazard if children put their fingers in the hinge. The company and the CPSC are aware of seven total reports of children placing their fingers in the hinges.
