Yet another recall has been issued involving hazardous magnetic toys. Child safety attorney Elliot Olsen knows all too well the dangers posed by small magnetic toys that children can not only choke on, but that can cause serious intestinal injuries to children if swallowed. He currently represents children injured by Magnetix toys. If swallowed, these tiny magnets can stick together inside a child’s intestinal tract and tear the child’s intestines, causing serious injury. On August 26, Magnetic Maze Board toys were recalled for the same hazard, though no injuries have been reported. Attorney Elliot Olsen discusses the recall and the hazards of the product.

Almost 200,000 Buckyballs High Powered Magnet toy sets are being recalled due to a choking and intestinal perforation hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced.

New York City-based Maxfield and Oberton, LLC is issuing the recall because the magnetic toy sets are non-compliant with ASTM International’s toy safety standard No. F963-08. This industry standard, effective August 2009, regulates the strength of magnets that can be sold to children of certain ages. The Buckyballs toy sets are marketed to children 13 and older, but the strength of the magnets, according to the standard, is too strong for that age group.

If swallowed, magnetic toys not only pose a choking hazard but can also attract to each other inside a child’s intestinal system if more than one magnet is swallowed. The strong magnetic attraction can draw two magnets together even if they are passing through different parts of the intestinal tract, and therefore tear or perforate a child’s intestine, causing severe internal damage. There have been two reports of children swallowing Buckyballs High Powered Magnets.

Buckyballs magnets that are labeled “Keep away from children” are not being recalled, however, packages labeled “Ages 13+” ARE being recalled. They were sold at toy stores, office supply stores and various other retailers, including online, from March 2009 through March 2010.

Child safety lawyers at Pritzker Olsen attorneys are currently representing several victims who have suffered intestinal damage due to swallowing Magnetix brand magnetic toys. Having experienced the devastating effects of these cases, Pritzker Olsen child safety lawyers join the CPSC in advising parents to keep these toys away from children and exercise extreme caution when any magnetic toys or small magnetic items are placed anywhere near children.

The recall of 360,000 kids lamps comes after the company, Innovage LLC of California, received nine incident reports, including seven situations in which lamps caught fire, one involving a child smoke inhalation injury and three property damage reports.

The decorative lamps are silver with rotating marine life or safari scenes. The lamps have a defect in their circuit board that can cause an electrical short, which is the source of the burn hazard and fire risk to consumers. The Discovery Kids lamp recall includes the following:

Discovery Kids Animated Marine Lamp, model numbers 1627121 or 1628626

Discovery Kids Animated Safari Lamp 1627124 or 1628626

All models have an 11-digit batch number beginning in “2″ printed on the bottom of the lamp

Model numbers are printed on the bottom of the packaging

The recalled Discovery Kids lamps were sold at department stores, mass retailers, drug stores and hardware stores nationwide and online from July 2009 through January 2010. Owners should stop using the lamps immediately and contact Innovage for information on how to return the product for a refund.

A toy gun recall involves Special Forces and Police SWAT toy gun sets that pose a choking hazard to children, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The orange tips at the end of the toy gun barrel can come loose and easily be swallowed by a small child, potentially blocking airways. About 9,600 sets are being recalled by retailer Dollar General of Goodlettsville, Tenn. The defective toys were manufactured by Dolencorp, LLC, also based in Goodlettsville, Tenn.

Accidental choking facts from Safe Kids USA:

Approximately 2,096 children in the United States, ages 14 and under, die from accidental injuries in the home each year and 3 million kids are treated in emergency rooms for accidental injuries occurring at home.

Airway obstruction – choking, strangulation or suffocation – is the leading cause of accidental death in infants and the fourth leading cause of accidental death in children ages 14 and under.

Children, especially those under age 3, are particularly vulnerable to airway obstruction death and injury due to their small upper airways, their relative inexperience with chewing and their natural tendency to put objects in their mouths.

The recalled toys were sold at Dollar General stores in 35 states from September 2009 through October 2009. The two products involved are:

The Special Forces Weapons and Accessories Set

SWAT Police Play Equipment Set

Each includes two toy guns and related accessories. The larger gun in each set bears the code: 48JQH09. Consumers should take the guns away from children and return them to Dollar General for a full refund or replacement.

A lead paint toy recall involves about 15,000 Nature Wonders HD Pinto Horse toy figurines imported by Minneapolis, Minn.-based Blip Toys, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced. The paint on the toys’ surface contains high levels of lead, which violates federal lead paint standards and therefore poses a lead poisoning risk to children playing with the toys. The horse figurines were sold at Walmart stores nationwide from January 2009 through July 2009 and had tags bearing the model number 92093 and the phrase “Nature Wonders HD.” Parents should immediately take the potentially dangerous toys away from children and contact Blip Toys for a free replacement toy.

Lead poisoning in children

Lead content in children’s toys can be particularly hazardous because young children are more likely to put small objects and toys in their mouths. According to the National Institutes of Health:

“A child who swallows large amounts of lead may develop anemia, severe stomachache, muscle weakness and brain damage. Even low levels of lead are linked to lower IQ scores.”

Lead poisoning is preventable. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends taking simple preventative steps to protect children from the hazards of lead poisoning.
