Magnetix Recall Over Intestinal Injuries, Death

Magnetix Toy RecallMagnetix Magnetic Building Sets are associated with one child’s death and at least 27 intestinal injuries since their initial recall in spring 2006, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The powerful magnets in these toy building sets, made by  Rose Art Industries Inc., (now known as MEGA Brands America Inc.) can come loose from plastic cases and can stick together inside the intestinal tract of a child who swallows them. This can cause intestinal perforation and blocking.

Cadmium in Toys Poses New Danger, Reports AP

Cadmium is a soft, light-colored metal that is used in certain types of batteries but is rarely used for other purposes due to growing awareness of its toxicity and properties as a known carcinogen. The results of a recent Associated Press report reveal a disturbing trend, however, in which toy manufacturers are substituting cadmium for lead.

Big Rex Books Recall Over Lead Poisoning Concern

A lead poisoning recall was announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) involving about 204,000 “Big Rex and Friends” cloth books from St. Martin’s Press, LLC of New York. The books were sold at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Borders and Toys “R” Us from May 2004 through October 2009 and bear the following ISBN numbers: 031249260X or 9780312492601.

The books have a red plastic dot sewn into them that contains 20 times more lead than is considered safe for children’s toys, according to USPIRG, who alerted the CPSC of the books’ lead content.

Action Figure Recall due to Lead Paint Violation

Military action figurines recalled by Jide Trading of Commerce, Calif., may contain excessive amounts of lead in surface paint that violates federal lead paint standards. The lead paint toy recall affects about 2,100 toys that were sold at dollar stores and discount stores from November 2008 to April 2009.  Consumers should immediately take toys from children and contact the company for a refund.
