Allergic Reaction Concerns Prompt Turkey Sausage Recall
A sweet Italian turkey sausage recall has been issued due to food allergy concerns, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Washington, Ind.-based Perdue Farms, Inc. recalled more than 10,000 pounds of fresh sweet Italian turkey sausage because it contains milk, which is a potential allergen that’s not declared on the product label.
Milk is one of eight foods identified by federal law as being known to cause serious allergic reaction in certain people and are therefore mandated to be declared on food labels, according to the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004.
Wegmans Seafood Sauce Recall due to Risk of Soy and Anchovy Allergic Reaction
A seafood sauce recall involves an allergic reaction risk related to soy and anchovy ingredients not listed on the sauce label, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Ed Roller, Inc. is recalling Wegmans 9-ounce “Food You Feel Good About” medium seafood sauce because it may contain undeclared soy and anchovies, which are potentially harmful allergens that can cause serious reactions, such as anaphylaxis, in people allergic to soy and anchovies. According to the FDA:
“The recall was initiated after a recent inspection by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets revealed the omission of Worcestershire sauce in the ingredient statement of this product. Worcestershire sauce is made with ingredients that include soy and anchovies. Production of this product has been temporarily suspended until corrective actions are taken.”
Anaphylactic Food Allergy Reaction Information
According to the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004, foods containing the following potential allergen ingredients need to be labeled:
- Milk
- Eggs
- Fish (e.g., bass, flounder, cod)
- Crustacean shellfish (e.g. crab, lobster, shrimp)
- Tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans)
- Peanuts
- Wheat
- Soybeans
According to the FDA, anaphylaxis from food allergies results in 30,000 emergency room visits every year, and 2,000 hospitalizations and 150 deaths. Upon first experiencing symptoms of an anaphylactic allergic reaction, an injection of epinephrine (typically from an Epi-pen) is typically administered to help prevent the reaction from becoming serious or fatal.
Wheat Allergy Recall of Frozen Turkey Patties
A frozen turkey patty recall has been issued due to wheat allergy concerns, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
Daniel’s Western Meat Packers, based in Pico Rivera, Calif., recalled more than 16,000 pounds of frozen turkey patty products that were mislabeled and failed to list wheat as an ingredient. Because of wheat allergic reaction risks, any wheat ingredient in a food product is required by federal law to be listed on the food’s packaging.
Pork Patty Mix Recall due to Wheat Allergy Risk
A wheat allergy concern prompted a recall of 750 pounds of frozen cured pork patty mix because wheat, a potential allergen, was not listed on the packaging as one of the product’s ingredients. Food allergies, including wheat allergies, can cause serious and sudden reactions including anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock.
Champ Meatball Co., of Whittier, Calif., issued the recall on Feb. 10, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The recall involves 14 -ounce packages of frozen “CHAMP, Nem Nuong Cured Pork Patty Mix for Barbecue Meat Balls.”
Pork Barbecue Recall Over Soy Allergic Reaction Concerns
A pork barbecue recall from Louisburg, N.C.-based Murphy House involves2,850 pounds of pork barbecue products that may contain soy flour, an undeclared allergen. The recall, announced by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), affects 5-lbs. buckets of “The Murphy House premium pork barbecue; cooked, unskinned pork with barbecue sauce added.” Each package bears the establishment number “EST. 2135″ inside the USDA mark of inspection.
