Black & Decker Recall of Defective Tools After Laceration Injury Reports

Black & Decker RecallBlack & Decker recall involving Random Orbit sanders has followed reports of laceration injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Towson, Maryland company recalled about 192,000 sanders after receiving 73 reports or incidents in which the black plastic disc that holds the sandpaper has broken or fallen apart. Fifteen of those reports involved injuries from flying pieces, including a facial laceration.

Defective Hitachi Coil Nailers Injure 15, Leave 5 Partially Blind

defective hitachi nailerA Hitachi coil nailer recall involves faulty power tools that can eject nails and have caused 15 injuries, five of which resulted in partial blindness.

Hitachi Koki U.S.A. Ltd. of Norcross, Ga., is recalling 50,000 coil nailers that may have a defective feeder, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This can allow nails to suddenly eject sideways and seriously injure power tool operators or bystanders. The firm has received 37 reports of nails suddenly ejecting sideways, including 15 injuries primarily to the eye region. Five victims  suffered partial blindness. These tools are typically used to project nails into drywall, wood or other materials.

  • Manufactured between October 2002 and September 2005.
  • Manufacturing dates can be determined by the serial number engraved at end of handle. The first digit represents the month in which it was made, and the second digit represents the last digit of the year it was made.
  • Sold at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Amazon.com and other home improvement and building supply stores from November 2002 through March 2006.

Owners should stop using the nailers and contact Hitachi for a free repair.

Machete Injuries and Laceration Hazard Prompts Recall

defective machete handleA sporting goods recall involves Gerber Gator Machetes that pose a laceration hazard and have injured five people, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The recall involves about 149,000 Gerber Gator Machetes and about 6,000 Gator Machetes Jr. imported by Gerber Legendary Blades of Portland, Ore., a division of Fiskars Brands Inc. of Madison, Wis. According to the recall announcement:

 

“The saw side of the machete can stick in wood during use, and if the user’s hand slips off the handle and slides forward across the machete blade, this poses a laceration hazard. Gerber has received five reports of individuals cutting themselves while using the Gator Machete, all of whom required stitches. Gerber has received no reports of injuries associated with use of the Gator Machete Jr.”

  • The blade bears the “Gerber” trademark

The Gator Machetes with modified handles are NOT included in this recall (bottom image). Consumers should check their machete to determine if it is included in the recall. If it is, stop using the recalled machete and contact Gerber about a free replacement machete.

LED Light Kits Recalled due to Burn and Fire Hazard

Recalled Rockler LED light kitAn LED light kit recall by Medina, Minn.-based Rockler Companies involves about 2,200 defective LED light kits with faulty wiring that can cause the battery pack to overheat and potentially explode, posing a burn risk to users.

The recalled Rockler LED light kits have two interchangeable heads, a spotlight head (stock number 26429) or a magnifying head (27017). Stock numbers can be found on the lights’ packaging materials.
