J.C. Penny Crib Recall: Drop-Side Cribs Manufactured by Yu Wei
About 8,000 drop-side cribs manufactured by Yu Wei of Taiwan and sold by J.C. Penney have been recalled, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall was initiated after nine reports of incidents involving drop side rails that malfunctioned or detached, including one report of a child who sustained minor abrasions to the arm.

Hazard: The drop-side rails on the crib can malfunction, detach or unexpectedly fall down, causing part of the drop side to fall out of position. When this happens, a space is created into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged or entrapped, which can lead to strangulation or suffocation. A child can also fall out of the crib. Drop-side incidents can also occur due to incorrect assembly and due to age-related wear and tear.
Description: This recall involves Yu Wei full-size cribs sold under the Scroll and Lauren model names. The cribs were sold in antique white, pecan and dark cherry, and have the following model numbers and date codes listed on the inside of the crib’s end panels.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and contact Yu Wei to get a free immobilizer kit that will immobilize the drop side. In the meantime, parents are encouraged to find an alternate, safe sleep environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard or toddler bed depending on your child’s age.
Entrapment, Suffocation and Falls Prompt More Crib Recalls
Due to multiple child fatalities around the country over several years, several manufacturers are joining efforts in a mass recall of more than 2 million unsafe child cribs, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Some of these cribs are drop side cribs, which have been found to pose crib suffocation hazards and even cause death for infants and small children. This recall is a continuation of an overall effort by the CPSC that began with a massive crib recall in December of 2009.
Generation 2 Childesign Crib Recall; Three Deaths Reported
A drop side crib strangulation and suffocation recall is related to three infant deaths, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The Generation 2 Worldwide and “ChildESIGNS” drop-side cribs have plastic hardware that can break, causing the drop side of the crib to detach, creating a space just large enough for an infant or toddler to become trapped.
Dorel Crib Recall After Infant Death; Several Injuries
A crib strangulation death and 10 crib injuries prompted a recall of 635,000 cribs distributed by Dorel Asia SRL of Barbados.
The drop side crib recall was announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after reports of a Cedar Rapids, Iowa infant death and nine infant crib entrapments–three of which resulted in bruises on the child’s body.

Although these cribs are convenient for parents reaching into at crib to lift a child, convenience is secondary to your child’s safety. That is the message being adopted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
