FDA Evergreen Produce Alfalfa Sprouts Warning Due to Salmonella Risk

The FDA is warning consumers not to eat Evergreen Produce brand alfalfa sprouts or spicy sprouts because the sprouts may contain Salmonella Enteritidis.

Just as our attorneys settled a lawsuit involving alfalfa sprouts served at fast food restaurants in Illinois, another Salmonella outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts has sickened at least 20 people in Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota and Washington State. The current outbreak has been linked to Evergreen Produce brand alfalfa sprouts.

The possibly contaminated Evergreen Produce alfalfa sprouts and spicy sprouts are sold in plastic bags labeled “Evergreen Produce” or “Evergreen Produce Inc.” The alfalfa sprouts are packaged in 4-ounce and 16-ounce plastic bags with pre-printed labels. They are also packaged in 1-pound and 5-pound plastic bags with stick-on labels. The spicy sprouts are packaged in 4-ounce plastic bags with pre-printed labels and 1-pound plastic bags with stick-on labels. To date, the FDA is aware of distribution in Idaho, Montana and Washington State. However, consumers and retailers in neighboring states should check the product label to ensure they are not eating or selling Evergreen Produce brand alfalfa sprouts or spicy sprouts.

Salmonella causes severe diarrhea and extreme abdominal pain, and victims may have some symptoms for months. In addition, the Salmonella infection may be so severe that it causes intestinal hemorrhage and perforation. Salmonella can also cause secondary infections:

  • Osteomyelitis (infection of the bones or bone marrow)
  • Meningitis (infection of the meninges surrounding the brain and spinal cord)
  • Pyelonepritis (a urinary tract infection that infects the kidneys that may be referred to as urosepsis when severe and may be called pyelitis)
  • Endocarditis (infection of the endocardium, the inner layer of the heart that may include infection of the heart valves)
  • Myocarditis (infection of the heart muscle)
  • Vascular infections (infection of the blood vessels)
  • Pancreatitis (infection of the pancreas)
  • Pneumonia (infection of the lungs)

Salmonella Enteritidis can also cause a type of arthritis known as Reiter’s syndrome.

Clover Sprouts Recall Due to Salmonella Outbreak in Washington and Oregon

Six people contracted Salmonella infections (salmonellosis) after eating clover sprouts distributed by Sprouters Northwest, Inc. of Kent Washington. Four of the illnesses were reported in Washington and two in Oregon. In response to this outbreak, Sprouters Northwest, Inc. of Kent, WA, recalled all of its clover and clover mix products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The Sprouters Northwest recall involves clover products distributed in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska in retail chains and through wholesale distribution. The withdrawal includes 4oz. (UPC 8 15098 00201 6) and 5oz. (UPC 0 33383 70235 3) containers of Clover sprouts, 1lb. bags of Clover (UPC 0 79566 12351 5), and 2 lb trays of Clover (UPC 0 79566 12362 1). Also included are Clover Onion sprouts in 4oz. (UPC 0 79566 12361 4) and 5oz. (UPC 0 79566 12361 4) containers, Deli sprouts in 4oz. (UPC 8 79566 12305 4) and 5oz. (UPC 0 33383 70267 4) containers, Spicy sprouts in 4oz. (UPC 8 15098 00202 3) containers, and Brocco sandwich sprouts in 4oz. (UPC 8 15098 00028 9) containers. This affects all of the above products with a “best by” date of 1/16/11 and earlier.

Wal-Mart of British Columbia, Canada, also has recalled Sprouters Northwest brand Deli Sprouts in conjunction with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
Salmonellosis, the infection caused by Salmonella, can developes into bacteremia, an infection of the blood. When this happens, the Salmonella can be carried to other parts of the body by the blood cells and cause serious injury or death. Salmonella bacteremia can result in one or more of the following focal infections:

  • Osteomyelitis (infection of the bones or bone marrow)

Salmonella bacteremia can also cause either septic arthritis or reactive arthritis (Reiter’s syndrome).

Living Foods Alfalfa Sprouts Recall

Living Foods, Inc. of Ionia, Michigan recalled bulk and retail-size packages of Alfalfa Sprouts after a package of Living Foods, Inc. ALFALFA SPROUTS tested positive for Salmonella. The company is working closely with the FDA and the State of Michigan to determine the cause of the problem.

The alfalfa sprouts were distributed to retail and food service facilities through wholesale produce suppliers in Michigan.

Salmonella From Alfalfa Sprouts Sickens 20, Leads to Recall

At least 20 people in 10 states are sick with a Salmonella infection, and four of those cases involve hospitalization.
